The Seattle Storm made a decisive move on draft night, acquiring the rights to Flau'jae Johnson in a trade with Golden State, adding one of the most explosive young guards in this year's class to their roster.

Johnson arrives in Seattle following an impressive four-year run at Louisiana State University, where she developed into one of the SEC’s premier players. In her senior season, she averaged 14.2 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 46.5% from the field, earning First-Team All-SEC and Third-Team All-American honors. She scored in double figures 27 times, including nine 20-point performances. Her career also includes a 2023 national championship, SEC Freshman of the Year honors, and more than 2,000 total points—placing her among elite company in program history.

At media day, Johnson’s mindset stood out as much as her résumé. “Self belief means everything,” she said. She also emphasized the importance of confidence entering the league, adding that you have to “walk in the door like you are suppose to be there.”

As she prepares for her WNBA debut, Johnson acknowledged the emotions that come with the moment. “I think I am going to be very excited. I know it’s a learning process and I am all about the process. I am going to be nervous but when the ball tips off I am not going to be nervous anymore.”

That confidence is balanced with respect for the franchise she’s joining. Johnson pointed to past Storm greats like Breanna Stewart, Nneka Ogwumike, and Sue Bird as players she admired, noting that understanding the organization’s legacy matters. “I think it is important to study the history,” she said. “I am grateful to be here, and I understand where this program is. Look at this facility—it’s really a player-first mentality here, and that makes me want to go all out. I know the history, and that’s something I want to build again. I’ve got to do my part in that, whatever that looks like. But I believe when you have an organization like this—people who really care, want to develop you, and have top-notch resources—great things come out of that.”

Gratitude also plays a major role in her perspective. “Im grateful to be here,” Johnson said. That appreciation fuels the energy she brings every day. “Coming in the world, I had like a chip on my shoulder. I just know that life is not promised, tomorrow is not promised [its a gift to be here]. Somebody is going to need that light [every day is not a good day] If i have that light, and its in me it will help other people.”

On the court, Johnson believes she can contribute right away. She highlighted her athleticism and quickness, along with her ability to shoot the three ball, and emphasized her defense—being “in the right space” and “being disruptive.” She noted that she “got a steal” that day.

For Seattle, Johnson represents a blend of production, personality, and purpose. With confidence rooted in self-belief and a clear respect for the franchise’s standard, she steps into the next chapter ready to contribute from day one.
